What is the big deal about going into the 4th 8hr shift. That' not but 32 hrs when completed. People work night shifts all over the world. We aren't talking split shifts here.
And on top of that, LaHood made a typical bureaucrat's response. Put an extra man up there. #1, Why? and#2, how do you pay for it?
Many here still don't get it....the Democratic party runs the skies.
Daley and his FAA thugs here taught us how to run a mtg - chicago style
when AA and UAL were told to come back to the table. The FAA was told to be at the mtgs - you know nonverbal threats go a long way.
The Daley/Obama/LaHood machine will tell us what we need.

WOW!!! Something happened at the FAA in a week, usually it would take years of studying the problem, at millions of dollars in costs. this whole damn situation is rediculous!!! i think the next time this happens, the aircraft on final should divert, and leave the controller alone for his nap. LOL
Billions for wars and other countries, can't afford a few more controllers?
The DOT/FAA response to this fiasco is strictly political, because it happened at Reagan National.
Had the same thing happened at Rattlesnake, Arizona, or Swampy, New Jersey, we would never have heard about it.

It sounds like the big question is do we need that tower open all night if there is so little traffic. Airlines land at airports with closed towers at night all over the country, why pay two controllers to do nothing when there is another possiblility of closing the tower during the slow night period.
