DFC awarded after four decades of service
Believed to be the first time in the four-decade history of the A-10 that a pilot has landed with no canopy and landing gear up, the Air Force said Maj. Brett DeVries, an A-10 pilot with the Michigan Air National Guard, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on Friday for an "extraordinary" emergency landing. the airman and the airplane are tough, and now we all know what tough really means. We know what competent airmanship looks like, and we still don't know how much of an A-10 can be damaged away, how strange an abstract sculpture a warthog can assume and still be capable of flight and landing, the kind the pilot walks away from, with an amazed look on his face no doubt. And there were folks actively trying to kill the funding for this primo air weapon. Those geniuses ought to be fired yesterday....
