Southwest Airlines gets ready for end of Wright amendment
One year from Sunday, the shackles come off Dallas Love Field, and Southwest Airlines Co. is already anticipating the moment. It is planning a full year of celebrations and promotions to lead up to Oct. 13, 2014, when the Wright amendment goes away and Southwest can fly nonstop anywhere it wants in the United States. (www.dallasnews.com) Más...Southwest survived at Love because Texas is a big friggin state. There is enough business between Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio alone. Plus OKC, Tulsa, New Orleans. Wright didn't hurt SW... it actually gave it a mini-monopoly that fit perfectly with their short hop philosophy. Wright didn't stop AA or Legend from trying to improve the service options with the 56 seat all First Class planes. They couldn't make any money at it and pulled out. SW was quite content.
Now I live 5 minutes from Love Field and a SW flight sure beats driving 10 hours to El Paso. Heck if they add the Vegas non-stop I'm sure I'll be on it heading to sin city for a weekend of partying.
But I'll happily drive to DFW for an AA flight to LGA or SEA.... (get my upgrade, enjoy dinner and get some work done) before I'll sit 3 or 4 hours in coach on a SW flight.

Good to see nothing has changed in congress over the years. The laws are dreamed up with utter disregard for the public for no other reason than to increase revenue and control for an involved party. The battle is fought between special interests and PACs and the lion's share of the garnered revenue then finds it way back to fill the war-chests of the involved politicians. I believe this law was named after ex speaker Jim Wright who was one of the most cooked politicians in our history. Well loved by those who benefitted from his scandals though.
If there is anything consistent about the congress, it's never ending greed and avarice. But good ole Jim was a much esteemed villain in Ft. Worth. Don't slander him too loudly at KFTW, they might "up yours" fees. SIC.
As I said to another poster, Bush did the same thing to help Kit Bond, R-Missouri, in 2005 by opening up nonstop from Love to MCI and STL.
Wright's district (Ft. Worth) needed the new DFW airport to be successful. So he was doing what his constituents wanted. Isn't that what you guys say Cruz is doing?

That will be good for Southwest Airlines.
It is amazing how Southwest Airlines survived at Dallas with all the restrictions.
