Bus Strikes Plane at Atlanta Airport, No Injuries
American Airlines passengers suffered a rough arrival after a bus slammed into their plane at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday night. The bus struck Flight 232 as it waited at a gate shortly after landing in Atlanta, Georgia, from Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, according to American Airlines spokesperson Liz Landau. And to add to everything else, Tom Horton was just named to the WAL MART board of directors today
It looks like it was one of their MD82's
Flight: AAL232 DFW-ATL
Tail: N484AA / Ship: 484
I'm sure as unhappy as American must be about the incident, that they're glad it wasn't one of their 737's or A319's that the bus hit!!!

Why is that?
They are retiring their entire MD-80 fleet. This just probably means they will write it off and be done with it. If it were a 737 or A319, then those are new aircraft and would likely require extensive repair. They have written two other MD80's off for similar accidents - one where a jack went through the fuselage during maintenance and the other when a fuel cart (I think) hit the radar dome on the front. Plus - if they write it off, the insurance covers it!
What is the difference between the resale value of an unbroken MD-80 and the insurance claim for this broken one? Hmmm, I wonder......
That I am not sure. However, it seems that most of the MD80's American is retiring are being sent to the boneyard rather than being offered up for resale. They are old and consume gas at a much higher rate than others. As of today, American has 161 of their MD80's in "stored" status (http://www.planespotters.net/Airline/American-Airlines), which means they don't get any money for them.
So an insurance claim would at least recoup something. Maybe a conspiracy theorist could come up with something...
As far as the storage, it must be considered that a lot of the Mad Dogs have been fully remanned at TUL and they actually have extra $ tied up in them, so although they are probably not worth it, they will not give them away.
