iPad2 Has Built in Gyro!
Scroll down to 1:24PM time stamp. They also showed photos of pilots using it in the cockpit during the presentation. (bits.blogs.nytimes.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
Much is made of the fact that TIS info won't be available with SkyRadar unless someone nearby has ADS-B Out. How distant from a ground station can an ADS-B Out aircraft be and still wake up a TIS broadcast? How far from the ground station can SkyRadar pick up a TIS signal once its awakened? Is East coast coverage so dense that TIS is pretty much always active anyway?
@sayintentions -- are you asking that Apple wait a lot longer to release new technology? I'm not sure I understand your complaint. The reason they're so successful is because of their constant innovation. If you want late products that don't update much, you could certainly find that in the marketplace.
I agree with Max that the iPad brings a lot to the cockpit and I keep mine as a backup as well. I however, work for a small airline and flight instruct occasionally for a living. (Remember us?) I'm pretty disappointed that Apple didn't bring all of this in one package - instead opting to come out with "iPad 2" in LESS than a year from the original. It's an incredible resource, but after paying about a month's disposable income for the original unit and the software license: what the deuce? The real average pilot can't afford this kind of corporate gamesmanship and the few private pilots that can don't fly enough to capitalize on it. This is becoming a toy for the one percenters in GA. I'll stick with my G-1000.

Fred, no question, SkyRadar with the external ADS-B receiver is a great way to get free weather. It's just too bad the FAA decided not to send ALL traffic to planes equipped with ADS-B receivers but no ADS-B transmitter. And I don't think most ADS-B receiver manufacturers make it clear that you won't get traffic threats for YOUR aircraft--unless you also have the ADS-B Out.
Max:
Thanks for the clarification..I do have TIS but not TCAD. I was waiting on that with the Garmin 800 Traffic and then found out that in order to have all ADS-B I need that expensive WAAS.
This SkyRadar solution would at least eliminate the XM fee.

Word is the FAA, even has approved it for Commerical Aviation use by pilots .. more computerized flight ... Now lets also track our flight on FlightAwarecom while we ride from point A to point B
