Alaska Airlines Already Cutting Back in California

Enviado

Alaska Airlines/Virgin America will eliminate or reduce service to five cities it currently serves from San Francisco International Airport SFO in what the Seattle-based carrier called a move to improve efficiency. It is also making schedule reductions at Los Angeles International Airport LAX. (www.sfgate.com) Más...

SFO is a nightmare on good day. Delays, crossing runways, weather etc etc etc cause no end of chronic and semi-permanent delays.

Personally, Alaska [and everyone else] should plan to increase service at SoCal's satellite airports - like Ontario [3 million people inside a 90 min drive and no delays at all usually] and Orange County - or - maybe even start up a place like March AFB when it goes public.

Southwest operates one flight a day to Chicago and it leaves 100% every day. Turn Ontario into a mini-hub - with flights to Chicago, FLL,DC, NYC, BOS, and then operate two flights a day from there to Hawaii and add Mexico flights - I bet the market is there - and theyd get the gate space virtually free from the Ontario Airport Authority who is really trying to grow that airport . . .

Unfortunately, SNA won't work as a hub. Too many restrictions on the airport alone, plus curfew. The landing rights there are horrendous, and cost-prohibitive to run as a hub. BUR is too space prohibited, but ONT would work. Even SBD would work if they really wanted.

LGB on the other hand... someone could easily give JBU a little run there if they had enough gates.

RAL is going to become a public-use field? interesting on that, as they already lost Norton AFB to San Bernardino Int'l airport. That leaves the Los Angeles (not) AFB as the only AFB in the SoCal Basin if March closes.

Back roughly 15 years ago, Aloha ran service out of SNA and BUR to HNL with a B738. If ETOPS compliant, Alaska's A320s could make that run...

I’m sure the Bay Area customers will appreciate your suggestions about Orange County and Ontario. That will certainly improve their travel options.
