Is Boeing CEO’s Perspective on Chinese C919 Narrowbody Jet Competition Naïveté or Realism?

Enviado

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun addressed the recent maiden commercial flight of China’s C919 narrowbody jet, downplaying speculation about its impact on the duopoly held by Boeing and Airbus. Calhoun acknowledged the C919 as a “good airplane” but emphasized that it will take time for manufacturer COMAC to scale up production capacity to meet Chinese airlines’ demand. He suggested that having three providers in the global market should not be seen as a significant concern. (www.airguide.info) Más...

I think Mr. Calhoun was being polite. Boeing needs business from China. Saying negative things about the Comac offering does not advance Boeing's cause, may harm Boeing's cause if China takes offense, and does not alter the fact that the Airbus and Boeing offerings are clearly superior. China has proven that it can produce a facsimile -- a low level analog of the original -- when it comes to technology. But it remains to be seen that it can produce anything independently that legitimately competes with non-Chinese products without being directed from outside (eg -- Apple showing Chinese manufacturers how to produce their phones).
