NYC needs runways, but 'ghost airport' stays quiet
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's airspace is known for its chronic flight delays, and planners have been looking for new runway space to ease congestion. Some aviation buffs say they have a solution, j . . . (flightaware.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
How much of JFK's limit is due to its very inefficient runway, taxiway and terminal layout?
I am not familiar with the area from the ground, but one issue the author did not address is vehicular traffic. The only access to a major highway from Floyd Bennett Field is via the relatively small Shore Parkway, leading right back to JFK to get on I-678. Also, would the airports share the required parking lots, shuttles, etc?
I would prefer to remove any regional traffic from JFK. Or you can replace 3 CRJs with 1 B737 and that way reduce load on runways. I don't like to see so many small airplanes in such big hub. Same applicable for EWR.
Open the Airport & move the regional jets there.
It could even become a VIABLE General aviation airport for those of us who cant stand to pay 8 bucks for avgas @ KTEB.

Floyd Bennett Field is a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and it will remain so. It will not become an airport again.
Stewart Airport:SWF lat : 41.4869 lon : -74.0974: Former large lift AFB in Newburgh, NY 70mi north of NYC. It would be cheaper and a better investment in the region's future to put in high speed rail from NYC to Stewart & Albany beyond and let everyone who would NOT prefer the "NYC 3" for flights go through there. Even now the cab ride might take less time than the one to JFK or Newark...
Anyway, outside of this field, wasn't KSWF repurposed from the AFB it used to be, to ease the congestion at the 3 main airports in the New York area?
