FAA warns about Boeing 747 & 767 fuel tank ignition risk

Enviado

The Federal Aviation Administration released two new airworthiness directives (AD) which require the airlines of the United States to modify their Boeing 747s and Boeing 767s fuel tank monitoring systems in order to prevent the risk of ignition within the tanks. (www.aerotime.aero) Más...

Also: “The risk of fuel-tank explosions caught regulators’ attention following the 1996 in-flight break up and crash of TWA flight 800, a Boeing 747-100. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that a fuel-air mixture likely exploded in the jet’s centre fuel tank.”

Took them 24 years to issue this “serious directive” to avoid potential “airframe loss”.

>> Took them 24 years to issue this “serious directive” to avoid potential “airframe loss”.

To be fair, a purge with inert nitrogen was required as a consequence of the TWA 800 crash many years ago.

>> Under the new directives, U.S. operators are required to modify fuel-quantity indicating systems within 72 months starting from November 10, 2020.

I wonder how many of the affected aircraft (especially the 747s) will still be in service by then. I'm guessing many operators will not implement this AD and just scrap the airframes.

Agree. Seems the aerotime link is hosted in Lithuania. I plan to avoid. It's among the countless gems contributed by MH370

You can read the B747-400 Airworthiness Directive here:

All for naught however. TWA 800 was shot down by the U.S. Navy. Just ask Pierre Salinger, he'll give you the straight poop. Oh, wait, he's dead. Well...never mind....

Best ;-,)
