I have always booked trans-oceanic flights by aircraft type with 767 the continuing favorite for comfort. Ultimately the more experienced travelers (the ones the airlines want onboard) will begin to do the same for domestic flights avoiding sardine seating. Leg room, amenities and comfort will return as a marketing tool.
Took a trip to Europe this past summer. Flew British Airways 747 Phoenix to London. Booked seats for my wife and I at the rear two abreast seats. The flight was not full so my wife moved to the two vacant seats behind our booked seats and, except for the cold and swaying I found the flight quite comfortable. We Flew back on an American Airways 787 because I have never been on one. Big mistake. 8 hrs of discomfort. All the nice electronics to play with doesn't make up for the awful lack of room.
