Small Blimp goes down at US Open / Erin, WI
A small blimp owned by Airsign.com deflated, caught fire and went down. It appears the pilot parachuted out. Although injured, it appears the pilot survived (www.jsonline.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
I saw the pictures on the news about this incident..was this not more of a hot air balloon, rather than the description "blimp"??my thoughts of a blimp are of the good year kind(quite large and requiring a small crew),and in years past, I actually knew a fellow who was the pilot of one..oh well, at least the pilot of whatever it was,survived..!

No he crashed while inside the aircraft and was burned, the early reports of parachuting were unfortunately incorrect.
I thought it was a hot air balloon shaped like a blimp??? at least that's what CNN said today Don't know just asking
You are mostly correct. It is a "thermal airship." I believe it has an internal structure and pressurization to maintain the shape of the envelope and uses hot air for buoyancy . It was manufactured by Gefa-Flug model AS 105 English Registration number G-SUNA.
Oh the humanity...
