Awesome piece of equipment. We used one in the 90's on a project in northern Russia transporting pipe and living accommodation modules out on the tundra. Got to ride up in the jump seat between the pilot/copilot one time. Rental and fuel was cheap then.
The wording describing the background to the Mi-26 pic is incorrect. Definitely not 'clear blue skies', dark thunderclouds is perhaps a more accurate description...
Time for the US to build the Chinook NG!
I have a soft spot for the Aircrane. I would love to see an updated "Super Aircrane". =)
A Mi-26 was outfitted with two 2000 U.S. gallon Bambi Buckets suspended about 120 feet under the aircraft to assist forest fire fighters. Although somewhat successful the idea never caught-on. The Mi-26 did set a record for a single delivery of water from a helicopter, 4000 gallons.
Not a fully outfitted one as that shown has been stripped of anything they could take off.
