Landing in Hong Kong
A fairly popular and intriguing video; I would recommend it for anyone that hasn't seen it! (www.youtube.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
it was awesome coming into kai tak
Great video. And the choice of the theme from '633 Squadron' was perfect...
So, that's what they call "maneuvering flight"?
Hey Ken...you gotta do what you gotta do and put that bird on rwy 13. To make our experience more dramatic...we were flying in the tail of a "Typhoon", which makes you double pucker! The "crab" was extreme...like it is most of the time at Kai Tak. It most definately a rush...if you're in to extreme!
I was being a bit sarcastic. Lack of positive control along with monitoring speed and attitude tend to be the killer during maneuvering flight. A Cirrus crash in Florida a couple years ago comes to mind. It was repositioning and stalled during a turn to the runway.
It can only get more interesting when you're dealing with a large aircraft of several hundred thousand pounds flying very low, very slow and banking tight to make the runway. You cannot do that without being very vigilant of all factors.
I would surmise such an approach can be done only by a pilot who respects basic stick and rudder skills more than any amount of automation. The only thing more dangerous is a pilot who does not understand how the automation works nor what happens when one or more components fail.

Dee:I don't believe all through the years, that I have seen any landing video, landed one there or watched one land, without crab of some kind cranked in, minor or extreme. I think they'ed have had to carry me out if a straight in would have ever come along. LOL
You're so right, preacher. A straight in final would put most everybody over the edge. Lol
