As much as I would like to bash on Lakes (having been a former pilot there), I can't. #1 to fly to Telluride requires much experience. Every pilot who flys there is high time high experience. #2 due to the amount of fuel you carry with you to Telluride, they most likely would not have been able to return to Denver safely with a gear down flight. The other options in the area to go for them are mostly single runway airports. These guys did it right. The fact that the runway was shut down for a few hours is insignificant. Just because it would have been a better option to go to Denver does not mean it is an operational option.

Makes sense to me.

Here I go again with the armchair QB thing, but, why wouldn't you go back to DEN where they have a lot of runways, and "Maintenance", instead of shutting down a single runway airport at 9000'. 190 miles, no harm, no foul. They don't always have to be there! The pax, I mean.

I agree but maybe it collapsed on touch . Other wise ya back to DEN it should have been where we have 6 runways.

If you have a gear unsafe light, you have a gear unsafe light. Status unknown. Landing gear problems are pretty low on my totem pole of emer. checklist items. Go somewhere where you can get it fixed and not shut down the world. As in a single runway airport. "According to the San Miguel Sheriff's Office, the incoming Great Lakes passenger aircraft reported a warning light indicated a landing gear was not locked in the down position."

And that boys and girls is why they want 1500 hour ATPs for FOs. The sharpest tool in the shed aint always in the left seat. Think Palm 90. Or Payne Stewart, when there was no sharp tool in the shed.
