Charlotte Douglas Airport Overlook
Although Charlotte Douglas International Airport doesn’t have the best variety of airlines compared to other hubs, it has one of the best spotting locations in the United States. (thirtythousand.wordpress.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
I still say KLAS tops it. Las Vegas Blvd for the backdrop as you see arrivals coming in from the east, as well as the north. Plus Tower's communications fed straight over the radio to you. Doesn't get any better than that, outside of somewhere like TNCM.
I really hope I have the opportunity to go there someday. I'd say KLAX is my favorite.
Baltimore (BWI) has great observation areas. The Tom Dixon viewing area as well as the Lounge. There are few different airlines that fly there, besides Southwest. That too is worth a visit.
What is sad that 911 has done away with a lot of observation both inside and out. My favorite pastime in years past was sitting in a lounge somewhere, watching the outside and hearing the rado chatter. Post 911, most of those are now inside security and have been remodeled? losing the radio and the observation. It used to be good cheap entertainment.
I miss the days of going to TPA with my 2nd cousin to watch takeoffs and landings. Been a long time since I've felt that kind of excitement w/o having to pay $50 to get into the amusement park. :(
I agree. STL had a parking lot at the end of the parallels (albeit without a radio provided, you had to bring your own). It wasn't a victim of 9/11 but the airport expansion. Of course thre's not nearly the traffic there nowdays either.
About 15 years ago, I was in St. Louis, and I remember watching TWA land their 1011s. I knew the 1011 was going to be ancient history; I didn't know that the same was true of TWA.
yeah it's sad to go by STL these days. I remember every gate being full and aircraft stacked as far as the eye could see. The runway side of the C concourse had (like you mention) numerous L10s, as well as 76s and flight 1's 747 at the end..and all the DC9s and 727s on the inside of C and D. All the TWE aircraft down at the B gates. Now, it's a ghost town..
