Something unforgettable in our April skies that wasn't the solar eclipse

Due to radar attenuation, the worst area of the storm was mistaken for the shortest way through the storm. The Archie Trammel weather radar class I attended shortly after this accident used it as the prime example of how to use the radar tilt and gain and what to look for on the screen. I regularly reviewed the material from that course and I'm sure it is one of the reasons I've enjoyed 50+ years of safe weather flying. Today's XM, ADS-b weather in the cockpit along with modern radars make a future event such as this unlikely.
Great story. I never heard about this one. I was still a little kid, living in Huntsville when this happened. I now live in Atlanta, and I did not see this on the news. It would have been cool if this made regular news and not just on PBS.
