Sounds like this aircraft will still be put to a good use for years to come.

Yep and even though the DC8s were retired by the airlines, the govt continued to use them for another 25 yrs or more. Kinda like the 707s and 135s - still flying

The new plane is being converted at NASA Langley and is expected to fly its first research mission in 2026. They expect some missions to reach 18 hours from the sounds things.

read a article years ago that NASA had a bunch of tires made just for the DC8, when they are exhausted then the plane is grounded, looks like they used them all, hope the operator they used to sit on anerjet`s ramp in MIA still can use them.

a very good ex-colleague of mine was the PFE on this excellent diesel 8, Doug Baker from Tehachapi. I had the vip tour & flew on the jumpseat 2X. always had the best coffee on board.

Several years ago, that DC-8 flew a geophysical mission over The Bagbee, Prescott, Cottonwood region of central Arizona at FL9. Aet the same time, a NASA U2 was flying racetrack over the same area at FL60. The next summer coincidentally(?) exploratory drilling was done in the area.
Great service! The 777 has big shoes to fill1
