Over 2 000 stranded at Chengdu Shuangliu Intl because of smog
More than 20,000 people are stranded at an airport in Chengdu, China, as flights were grounded by heavy smog and fog, Chinese state-run media reported. spent 4 hours at Xian waiting for smog to clear... air over there is awful... when the NE monsoon starts to flow all that muck gets blown down to SE Asia...
Yet they continue to build more coal power plants everyday.
yep...and they want us to shut down... maybe they and India should make the next big moves toward clean air.. we've done an awful lot so far
The Chinese heat their homes with coal...brown coal they mine there. While their power plants are contributors, the worst is the thick brown smoke that comes from every home when the temperature drops which they use for cooling and heating.
In 1952, London suffered and event now known as the Great Smog. It's estimated that somewhere around 12,000 people died as a result of the event. Among the causes, people heating with brown coal, along with bad combination of environmental conditions.

Yeah. Bejing had to shut down most of it's industry and severely restrict motor vehicle use before and during the 2008 Olympics.
