Sick at 30,000 feet: How Delta handles urgent medical needs on board

Enviado

When more than 192 million customers take to the skies in a given year on board Delta, in-flight medical events can occur, just as they do on the ground. In 2018, the airline reported about 11,900 medical events, or one medical event per 460 flights [1]. The most common problems are fainting or feeling dizzy and lightheaded (33 percent), nausea or vomiting (15 percent), and respiratory (10 percent) or cardiovascular symptoms (7 percent) [2]. That's why DELTA is one of the best carriers in the world. By investing in flight first aid he is investing in his passengers confidence. I want to know these services are available and they have already saved lives over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. AIR CANADA offered the same coverage including all crews are trained on CPR. It is set to work automatically.

Delta is excellent....My son and I were on board a Delta flight, years ago, enroute to IAD when a man went into a diabetic coma and we immediately diverted to nearest Canadian airport in New Foundland, where an ambulance arrived and took him to hospital.....Customs came on board as well.

Reads like a piece that the Marketing Department at Delta, STAT-MD, or both, put together.

I'd be surprised if any major US, Canadian or other top-tier international airlines didn't have similar training programs for both cockpit and cabin crews, as well as the direct link via Sat Phone to the emergency dept contracted to provide medical advice, deversion recommendations, etc.

At my airline, I had to use the medical recommendatios provided via Sat Phone once, on a flight from SJU-JFK about thirty minutes into the flight. Med-LInk's (our contracted provider) was able to talk directly a physician passenger how tended the ill pax and it's recommendation was to continue to destination, but not on the AR Routes as planned. They recommended to change our routing to re-route over the US mainland in case the situation worsened unexpectedly. Re-routing added about forty minutes to the flight time. Ill pax was met by medics at the JFK gate and left in stable condition.
