Emirates A380 emergency landing in Colombo

Enviado

An Emirates A380 giant bird had emergency landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka for refuelling. This aircraft EK 413 was en route from Sydney to Dubai. This was the first ever landing of an A380 aircraft in the Sri Lankan Aviation history. Though it was told that the runway at the Bandaranaike International Airport was too short for an A380 landing, the Captain of the aircraft was able to land safely with no problems. The aircraft took off in just 53 minutes… (infolanka.asia) Más...

It is a big deal cause the pilot took a risk to land on a runway which was said that it is too short for an A380 landing. So I don't think the pilot would take a risk of 517 people on board un less it was an emergency :D

Roger that...thank you very much for your answer. May I ask if you believe if this aircraft should be making such a long trip with many airports unable to safely land the machine because it is so big? I see exactly the issue, the low fuel was unexpected.

The question in my mind is why did the crew run short of fuel? All those computers and high tech equipment plus outstanding weather and winds aloft information yet they run low on fuel?

Why?

Even The Aviation Herald (www.avherald.com)doesn't know yet.

Mark: sometimes the planning done by the dispatch office is optimistic and on the long flights the conditions can change quickly. This event is significant in that it highlights the inherent flaw in the A380. It is too big to land on many runways. If the dispatch office was unaware of this fact then..well they certainly know now. My guess is that the crew were avoiding turbulence/weather and they were burning fuel faster than the flight plan predicted.

Roland,

Speaking from well over 14,000 hours the vast majority in passenger transport aircraft your reason of dispatch being 'optimistic' is odd at best.

The Captain's (legal) responsibility is to verify the flight plan is proper. This includes verifying the fuel load has been correctly calculated and loaded.

Change quickly? Well, yes in terms of some weather. Winds aloft are generally forecast fairly well. Forecasts, in addition to PIREPs, complete the winds aloft planning. Additional we all acknowledge they are, indeed, forecasts. Therefore we need to plan for something a bit worse.

Off the top of my head, the distance between Sri Lanka and Singapore is, what, maybe 1,000 miles? That's quite a bit to be short.

Just looked up the distance online which came up with a distance of 1,697.87 miles. Reference: www.mapcrow.info/Distance_between_Colombo_CE_and_Singapore_SN.html

In closing, I want to say I was appalled at the comment regarding '... planning by the dispatch office is [sometimes] optimistic ...'

That is a mindset a certified, well trained dispatcher would never hold. Yes, there are many disputes between the pilots and dispatchers during pre-flight (and in-flight) around fuel, diversions, etc. But any dispatcher -- and I suspect there are some -- who plans flights with an optimistic view, should be terminated. Full stop.

Your comment, 'What is the big deal here...? The 'plane landed for fuel...so what?' is uninformed, naive and clearly displays a complete lack or practical aviation experience, knowledge, responsibility and common sense when it comes to an unscheduled landing due to low fuel (other than due a mechanical issue).

Mark: I am an engineer not a pilot. Not an MBA either. If the dispatch and planning was so good then all the long flights would be in the groove they should be...would they not? The Captain would be redundant. Incompetence usually starts at the top of an organisation and usually has to leave when the eployees get sick of working hard to keep 'em afloat. If you want to continue this discourse feel free.
