Plane forced to dump fuel over Lake Michigan

Mechanical problems forced an American Airlines plane en route to China to dump thousands of pounds of fuel over Lake Michigan.WMAQ-TV reports that the flight took off from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Sunday night and returned safely to O'Hare about 90 minutes later. Aside from scaring the living S#it out of the passengers and people on the ground, wouldnt it make sense to have dump & burn systems on aircraft to cook off the fuel they dump before it hits the ground? I remember a similar event in NYC where an Airbus with a landing gear issue showered most of Queens in jet fuel before landing.
