I guess the sleepy ground controller can't understand anyone who doesn't have a New York accent.

The accents on many foreign pilots can sometimes make one doubt they are even speaking english. Note the subtitles required in the article of the audio. I have listened to ATC audio in the past and have had trouble comprehending. The controllers do a good job as they can anticipate the requests and repeats of orders given.

Actually, I'm pretty 'worldly' and speak a couple of languages (no, not Italian) and I could not understand the guy either. I'm not 'Murican centric', but if English is going to be the official international language for flight operations, this Italian dude needs to brush up. Not being able to speak English very well at all can have devastating consequences. If this was some kind of emergency, it would have taken quite a while to understand what the pilot was saying!!!

Imagine this Italian pilot trying to communicate with a Norwegian air traffic controller when English is not the first language for either.

Happens all the time. French use to be the international language
