Severe turbulence can leave severe injuries that go beyond the body. A friend of mine worked for a charter carrier in CANADA as a flight attendant. The severe turbulence she experienced coming out of MEX to YYZ. Her colleagues thought she had broken her neck.
Fortunately she recovered but she was grounded from severe trauma to her neck. She still sees a specialist who treats severe spinal cord injuries. Just think of the number reported by Flight Aware.
