The quota-driven drive to make flying more perilous

Enviado

Air-traffic controllers are far too important to Americans’ safety to be subjected to unconstitutional race-based hiring in the name of “diversity.” It’s a shame the Federal Aviation Administration doesn’t see it that way....The change came after an all-but-unnoticed announcement by President Obama’s new FAA head Michael Huerta, in May 2013, of his intent to “transform” the agency “into a more diverse” workplace. Reminds me of the Tom Lehrer snippet "... the usual jokes about the army aside, one of the many fine things one has to admit is the way that the army has carried the american democratic ideal to it's logical conclusion in the sense that not only do they prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race, creed and colour, but also on the grounds of ability."

FAA policy seems to follow that.

Sadly John, the crux of this forum is no longer our base. The down votes regularly reveal a new constabulary. They will reelect our long term demise if possible. Proud to say, my last few years of aviating have been with the old timers (ATC guys) who were paid very well to stick around and keep the idiots at bay. If complete chaos is what this admin. is after I think it's working!

BW, I think many of the down votes are on the policy not the content of the paper for I feel exactly the same way. I would venture that most of the pilots particularly those flying in congested areas have trepidation on the policy.

The aggrieved applicants are one issue, but the guys in the cockpits and their passengers are an even bigger concern. Replacing merit with diversity in a critical situation like the ATC folks that keep us all safe is nothing short of criminal negligence. They are counting on a margin of safety currently in place to keep their decisions from killing a few hundred innocent people. If this happens, none will ever be held accountable. Meanwhile it is the old story...when the favored group(s) cannot meet the standards, lower the standards.

I would expect a flurry of retirements of the experienced controllers who are being used as stable boys (and girls) to clean up the mess left behind by the bureaucrats. They are only going to hold hands for so long. I cannot blame them.

Would that I possessed your optimism. I think they don't want to hear it. Thus, they are shooting the messenger. Anybody? The last couple of years going to TEB involved delays and ground stops on severe clear days. Another indictment of the system. Even the 1%'ers may no longer be in control.
