I am NOT the author of this but thought I'd just pass it on.

Olde English Pilot commandments.

1. Thou shalt abstain from ye intersections take-off for, verily, ye runway behind thee, as ye altitude above thee, cometh not to thine aid when thou needest them.
2. Thou shalt not linger on active runways lest thou becomest like unto potted meat.
3. Ignorest thou not thy checklists for many are ye switches, handles, gauges and other demons waiting to take cruel vengeance upon thee.
4. Thou shalt cast thine eyes to thy right and also to thy left as thou passes thought ye firmament lest thy fellow pilot bring flowers to thy spouse, and comfort her in other wise.
5. Thou shalt not buzz, for ye fury of ye authorities shall be called down upon thy head.
6. Thou shalt be mindful of thy fuel lest there be naught in thy tank to sustain thee upon ye air and thy days be made short.
7. Trust not thine eyes to lead thee through ye cloud lest celestial beings await you therein.
8. Thou shalt not trespass into thunderstorms lest ye tempest rend ye wings from thy chariot and cast thee naked into ye firmament.
9. Put not thy trust in weather prophets, for when ye truth is not in, then they shalt not accompany thee among thy ancestors.
10. Thou shalt confirm thine airspeed often on finals lest ye earth rise up and smite thee.

This is why I love altitude. Altitude = options. Most of my cross country flying is >10,000 feet.

Two things absolutely useless in aviation: (1) the altitude above you, and (2) the runway behind you.
