Aviation report finds that airline delays are undercounted

Well, I see it like this. A regional airline is painted in the legacy carrier's colors and is held out to the general public(never mind the small print)as flying on that major carrier. Were it not so, they would paint in their own colors and fly for anybody as long as capacity was met. i.e. Republic that flies for all of them, yet the planes are dedicated to a particular Airline. For a start, they ought to take the % out of the pax requirement numbers and make the legacies report their regional delays as theirs. That would level the playing field and make it more honest right away.

If the regional flights are responsible to and controlled by the major carriers flight ops center, then their on-time performance should be listed with the performance of the major for whom the flight is flown, and who ultimately decides which flights should be delayed and canceled.

It's no surprise given the reporting rules, that airlines will preferentially delay the regional flights. Plus with fewer passengers per flight, each delay impacts fewer passengers.

Minor correction to that, Legacy Carriers such as Republic have planes that are painted generic white and the planes in that category are flown under all the carriers. Sometimes it is to pickup a canceled flight of a broke plane, and sometimes it is to fill in for overloaded planes. You will not see many of them, but they are out there. Colgan had 2 Dash 8 Q-400's and 1 SABB that were painted white for example.

1. Republic is not a legacy carrier.
2. The white colgan q's only flew for united. They were short term lease airplanes to cover for the aircraft that were going through the first class upgrade. Since they were short term lease it made no since to paint them.
3. The white saab colgan had was a lease as well. colgan did have a number of saab in the colgan air livery that were used as floaters. A perfect example was CRW. The aircraft would come in as a united flight and leave as a US Air flight.
4. The ASAs commuters have with the legacy often stipulates what percentage of the fleet can be generic paint.

Did not know that but that is what I am talking about, fly where needed rather than dedicated

Mark Twain once wrote ""Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.'"

When a flight's scheduled duration is 2 hours yet takes about 90 mins from wheels up to wheels down, one can assume some schedule padding going on there.

If that is the case, how come I have to explain every maintenance delay that happens regardless of the cause... I find this hard to believe.. If we miss one we have the upper bosses coming down on us...

Stats are meant to confuse not to explain!
Every statistician learns and remembers the tricks available.
Like when to use Arithmetic mean or harmonic mean or geometric mean !
Which kind of deviation curve to deploy !
And so on.
Their job is similar to filing/creating income tax return. You calculate backwards !
I know it first hand. As a participant as well as a direct observer.
