NTSB Links Crashes to Mythical Phenomenon

There have been a couple of accident reports that have come to our attention in which the NTSB cites as a probable cause the accident airplane making a downwind turn. Don’t get me wrong: The statement of probable cause is often little more than a way of saying the airplane crashed because, well, it crashed. (www.flyingmag.com) Más...

It's not the turn to downwind that causes this. It happens in the turn to downwind because of wind shear and a low airspeed. It could happen anywhere you climb thru a shear and entering a tailwind at a fairly low airspeed. Same thing can happen on final in a microburst. Keep your hand on the throttle and be prepared to push it thru the panel when this occurs. What's the memory item for imminent stall? Unload, full power, adjust.
