Union Blasts American For Flight Attendant 'Beauty Contest'
American Airlines is looking for its most photogenic flight attendants. But the attendants union is criticizing the airline, saying the effort essentially amounts to a "beauty contest" that the union says recalls a sexist ear in which attendants were known as stewardesses (travel.usatoday.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
I used to be inflight crew, and flew with alot of fugly sky hags and big butts (but there were a few who took pride in their appearance). Why did the airline let them get away with it? Well, let's just say they were based out of Atlanta and not the most upscale airline...
Amy you are a good sport, a pro, and one helleva gal. Why is everyone so dame uptight? It sounds like you might be crew yourself. If so, I only hope one day we do a few flights together. Drinks on me! And I agree, post the pictures.
Emirates Airlines (out of Dubai) requires full-length photos along with the application and copy of passport. Korean Air's flight attendants all look like petite gorgeous Barbie dolls. And Hooters Restaurant chain has a definite prototype for their servers' appearance. Looking beautiful should be a part of the job, and I hear Virgin Air has some of the most attractive crew members. Thousands of eager applicants want to fly and see the world, so airlines have a right to be selective.
I agree. Lets post some pictures and we can vote just like we do with pictures of fine looking Aircraft.

I'm still trying to figure out what a "sexist ear" is. :D
I think that being poised, slender, and attractive should be a very important part of the job. It is definitely a requirement in many other countries' airlines. If your booty is too wide to fit on the jump seat, and your face and hair don't project a pretty image for the company, then there are scores of others lining up for the job, who are also, strong, intelligent, and are capable of handling emergency and safety issues. Yes, beauty is important in this profession, in my opinion.
