Co-pilot moved seat, sent jetliner plummeting
The co-pilot of an Air India Express 737 sent the jetliner into a terrifying 7,000-foot plunge in May when he accidentally hit the control column while adjusting his seat, investigators report. (news.blogs.cnn.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
the a/p is to be disconnected by a force of a high amount, so the pilot can take control of the plane as quickly as possible if they happen to get in a situation where they need to act superbly fast (e.g they find a truck in front of them at FL350 or something) It would be a waste of time to reach over to the glare-shield and flick the switch.
Mishka, moushka, MICKEY MOUSE! Wheres toodles when ya need it.
Wow I can see none of you fly the 737. TTail was on the right track. In India they have a very large shortage of pilots. The preliminary information on this issue is the Co-pilot did not know how to right the aircraft. That IS the scariest part. If the autopilot is kicked off on a 737 (which maintains a trimmed state while engaged) it will continue to fly basically in the same direction and at the same altitude if undisturbed. The proper fixes would have been to hit the autopilot on lever/button (depending on model) or basic hand flying. With this issue I think you may find over time to be a pilot proficiency issue, but they still have to investigate. Until the findings we are all arm-chairing.
All here need to read about Eastern Airlines Flight 401 that went down into the swamps of the Florida Everglades in '72 just due to such pilot error. Google it!!!
Souinds like another case for Avwatch!
well then, maybe the pilots should have to push a button or flip a handle. sound too easy to disengage the AP.
