In-Flight Entertainment System Flaws Put Passenger Data at Risk
A security consultant at IOActive privately disclosed the issues he discovered to Panasonic in March 2015. The vulnerabilities in the Panasonic Avionics IFE firmware could allow a local attacker to access passenger IFE systems, display incorrect or misleading information about a flight path, for example, or in other cases, steal personal information and payment card data. Major security flaws have already been demonstrated in cars. The case I studied (Jeeps being compromised over cellular via the entertainment system) would have been prevented with a hardened firewall between the entertainment system and the rest of the CAN bus. Hopefully aircraft entertainment systems rely on completely separate GPS and not a connection to flight systems to get position data.
