NR77V —
This replica of the Granville Bros Gee Bee Model Z Super Sportster is on display at The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field (KBFI) in Washington State; however, this aircraft has now been suspended from the ceiling so it is no longer possible to walk up to it and get a great closeup look.
This replica of NR77V features slightly longer wings and a slightly longer fuselage than the original and these two alterations make this racer more stable and controllable. The original NR77V Gee Bee Model Z crashed on Dec 5, 1931, while pilot Lowell Bayles was making a speed record attempt. Pilot Bayles was fatally injured.
This aircraft on display was used in the 1991 Disney movie The Rocketeer.
Comments
The Museum of Flight will be reopening after being closed due to COVID restrictions. The reopening date is March 4th, just one week from tomorrow. A couple of the exhibit areas will remain closed because of spacing restrictions and the B727 exhibit will not be open for people to walk thru, but the museum is definitely one location that anyone interested in aviation should visit.
