McDonnell Douglas FA-18 Hornet (16-9214)
"Vampire One One," an E/A-18G Growler (169214) of the Navy's VX-9 "Vampires" (AIRTEVRON NINE = AIR T(est) (and) EV(aluation) (Squad)RON NINE, Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake) is rotating away from Reno-Tahoe International's runway 16L as it rockets past my temporary spotting position at the intersection of taxiways Juliet and Charlie.
Comments
The official National Weather Service temperature at midafternoon when this Growler departed was 93 degrees, but it was up into triple digits out there on the open airport grounds -- and it was way, waaaay up into triple digits a few seconds after "Vampire One One" went blistering past with burners lit. The pilot was super - as he was taxiing out and I was snapping pics from just a few feet away, he and I exchanged waves and I rendered a fast salute -- which he returned -- and moments later, as he went airborne past me here, he waved once more -- with a wing waggle.
*F*I*V*E* Stars, Gary!!! :-)
Superb shot Gary! An exemplary photo!
