PZL-OKECIE Wilga 2000 (N123T)
This is the highly modified PZL-104 Turbine Wilga 2000 "Draco" that crashed earlier today while attempting to take off from Reno Stead Airport in strong winds. Fortunately, no occupants were injured; however, the aircraft was extensively damaged. While on its takeoff roll along Runway 26, the aircraft ground looped and went off the right side of the runway as the wings collapsed.
The aircraft had been on display at the just-concluded 2019 National Championship Air Races (aka: Reno Air Races) which is where this photo was taken four days ago. High winds on the final day of the races yesterday had caused the cancellation of the Biplane Gold Medal race, and those strong winds had carried over into today. The pilot of "Draco," owner Mike Patey, was reportedly attempting to depart RTS in advance of the arrival of a weather front with even stronger wind gusts.
