North American P-51 Mustang (N5420V)
I took this shot of RT Dickson taking off in his P-51 Mustang, 'Swamp Fox' at a private training event for airshow pilots. His wingtip ended up being about 10 feet from me due to how much he drifted left on takeoff. It was quite the experience standing that close to a P-51 with the throttle up. Even P-51 pilots sometimes forget "more right rudder" on takeoff ð.

Joshua...........
I would be really disappointed if this is not the best pic of the week on Flightaware.
Congratulations on a Winner

Ken,
Thanks so much! I'm still just so thankful to have gotten to have attended this event the past couple years. It's not every day you get to stand right next to a Mustang taking off, or have a de Havilland Chipmunk fly 5 feet over your head.... Especially when you're only 17 and still an amateur photographer. That's my favorite part about the aviation community. Everyone is so welcoming.
Unfortunately, I only get the daily newsletter so I won't be able to tell if mine made it into the weekly :(

Nice shot! Although it looks like the photographer needs to duck.
Mark,
Thanks! I did the math afterwards based on video footage and marks on the runway..... Wingtip was less than 13 feet from me.

Simply Beatiful!!!
Nice shot...
Nice shot...
hope you were laying down!!! whew, that would be to close that prop for me....
The pilot is pretty trusting of that 75 year old Rolls. The gear appears to be starting to cycle; the inboard doors have already opened.
Simply outstanding ! *****
Thanks so much for all the replies y'all! If y'all are on Instagram, my aviation photography page is @waka.photography_172 :)
And yes Jared, the gear were already coming up when I took the shot. He actually dropped a little bit after the gear started coming up and was just a couple feet from a nasty prop strike. He told me afterwards that it was a big "Oh crap" moment and it spooked him a little bit.

WOW, What a thrill watching your video. The other guy bailed at the last second while you stood your ground. Have to say I would have probably bailed also. Major kudos to you sir for giving us an award worthy shot. ***** 5-stars
It has been a while since this photo has been posted, but it is still one of the best photos of a P-51 taking off that I have ever seen. Thank you for bringing it back to those of us who missed it. 5 to 10 stars for sure.
