Emirates Announces Deal With Rolls Royce for 50 Trent 900 Engines
Earlier today, Rolls Royce announced its largest engine order ever with Emirates Airline. The order, worth $9.2 Billion will provide Emirates with engines to power 50 A380's, which will begin to enter service in 2016. (www.rolls-royce.com) Más...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
The headline is misleading. Each A380 has 4 engines, so the order is for at least 200 Trent 900s, not 50.
I'm not sure about that. In my opinion, Emirates is realizing that Airbus is not going to invest in making an A380stretch or neo, so retrofitting their current fleet is their way of getting around that. I don't blame Airbus: the amount of capital needed for R&D, prototypes and testing is huge and for only one customer in an industry slowing down is not worth the investment.
And that customer would only talk and not put any skin ($) in the game.
Wasn't that a trent 900 that blew up and nearly took that 380 down back in 07?
It was. But the problem was due to an oil leak triggered by overfilling a reservoir during maintenance (human error).
Incorrect, the oil leak and subsequent explosion was caused by a pipe that was not manufacturered correctly.
Following the incident, every Trent 900 engine was recalled and if necessary replaced or repaired by Rolls Royce.
