United requests American Airlines flight waiver be denied
United said that American should not be granted a dormancy waiver for the Chicago-China flights it recently stopped flying, saying in a regulatory filing that other airlines should get a shot at those route allocations. In October, American Airlines Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) filed a dormancy waiver with the U.S. Department of Transportation for its 14 weekly Chicago-China routes. Delta wants it denied as well. They want to add a MSP - PVG flight. This would be sweet revenge for Delta as American got Delta's waiver denied on its SEA - HND flight.
United is right to jump in. It is true that there are difficult market conditions, but if President Trump and President Xi make a deal on trade, the current "difficulties" will evaporate. American would be smart to make it easy for China bound pax to bounce between Korea, Japan, & Hong Kong with cooperation with local carriers. Cathy are you listening?
