Bombardier ‘anchor’ for Canada, Trudeau briefing memo says

Enviado

Realistically, Trudeau will be faced with supporting an essentially finished product transitioning into a large potential market. All indications are that the product is very good and likely to increase sales exponentially after demonstrating reliability and economic operating costs (especially if the price of oil rebounds).

His alternative has both economic and political implications. Were the project to fold or relocate, the job losses will probably cost every bit as much in unemployment benefits and other government support as opposed to retrieving much of their money in income taxes. Bombardier is not self contained and there will be a similar ripple effect through its suppliers. Politically, Trudeau needs to hold onto Quebec and the manufacturing at Mirabel.

I think he will go through the motions and extend the money to Bombardier as a low interest loan.

1 aspect of the story which I completely agree with is how Bombardier has become an 'anchor', however my interpretation probably does not jive with where they are coming from.

What the article does not mention that the Federal Government has already dealt a blow to Bombardier by not allowing the expansion of the Toronto Island Airport, Billy Bishop; which means that Porter does not take the C Series jets for themselves, so no Canadian sales. If Trudeau wants to help Bombardier first allow the expansion of the airport which then allows sales of the jets to a Canadian Operator.

Agreed! That sale would have been highly beneficial to Bombardier and to Canada. Bad decision on this govt's behalf to nix it.

Because the folks who live in the new condos on the lake shore somehow have more say. They dont want the Island airport period. Look at the many tactics they employed to try to stop or slow down its operation. They must be smiling now.

Politically Trudeau needs to keep the Toronto leftists that oppose expanding YTZ and even though they are most likely to benefit from it, no amount of logic or data will overcome NIMBY attitudes. Fallacious accusations of increased noise, water pollution etc will be tossed out, Air Canada and likely WestJet will lobby against it (unless they get access too).

Operationally Porter's Q400s with their high cruising speed can operate almost as effectively as jets for destinations up to 1000 miles and do it cheaper. If you look at the time saved by avoiding YHZ they are totally competitive.

You must work for Porter and expanding the airport is wishful thinking! It will never happen. Buttonville has a better chance than the island of an expansion. If Deluce wants to play with the big league, then there's always Pearson or Hamilton. Either way he will make money.

I do not work for Porter, or any other airline.

Toronto Pearson stopped funding Buttonville. It will close in a few years and be made into a commercial centre

Bombardier is an anchor and a half Tax payers should not be forced to support this or any other industry Have them cut the paychecks of the corporate heads and turn that back into the support of the company too much money gos into managment and not enough into the actual product

You could probably cut them all to zero and purchase a set of wings for just one aircraft. The only real question is who is going to put up the money. The choices are Canada as a structured loan with an ROI and keep the jobs there or another entity like Airbus or the Chinese that can take essentially a finished product and locate it wherever they choose.

I acknowledge that global aerospace is heavily subsidized and that this is required to 'play' the game, however having 1 well-healed family reap the majority of the wealth is not equitable to taxpayers.

Structured as a loan with a defined ROI the taxpayers are protected unless the corporation declares bankruptcy. If the provincial government wants to just give them the cash that should not impact the federal taxpayer.
