As cold hearted as it may sound, it is my understanding that Australia has footed most of this bill. Sorry folks, but the Airplane belonged to Malaysia, with a preponderance of Chinese Nationals on board. I'd call it off or have them handle it and pay the bills.

More like "sphere of influence". Territorial waters only extend 12 miles from the coast, and I think it is fairly certain that the flight didn't disappear that close to Australian territory.
They have gotten a wealth of oceanographic data on a lightly explored section off their back porch. Aside from the goodwill generated had they found it, that could be part of it. Taxpayers might not have been so willing to fund the operation on a strictly scientific basis. Just a thought.
