Bieber’s pilots ‘had to wear masks to block the weed’

Enviado

The behavior of Justin Bieber and his entourage including his father put the flight crew of this Super Bowl bound flight in danger as well as themselves. Hopefully the FAA will investigate this incident further and take some action. (pagesix.com) Más...

Ken Lane 28
Sorry, this would not happen on my bird. I will not put my ticket at risk for this jerk nor any other. I'd be calling for authorities to meet the plane and it would not surprise me if that flight crew did so just to protect themselves.

But Beiber's group was also abusing the flight attendant to the point the captain asked her to remain with them near the cockpit for the remainder of the flight.

If the 135 operation does not defend its employees against any actions by such a jerk client with Beiber's history that operation deserves to go under.

If the smoke was so bad that the pilots felt it necessary to wear oxygen masks, then they should have declared an inflight emeregency with an unruly passenger and diverted to the first available airport. Clearly, no one has ever said "no" to this twerp and he keeps getting away with whatever he wants. We need to stop making stupid people famous.
KennyFlys
Ken Lane 4
I believe it was the pilot who alerted ATC to have cops available upon landing. As bad as it was he likely figured an arrest was quite likely.

But the smoked all the obvious evidence then failed to search the plane well enough before releasing Beiber.

It appears that this crew acted professionally. You do what's necessary to complete the mission as safely as possible. Don't do anything to aggravate or elevate the situation. Make a report and say never again. Now knowing how this group rolls, any company willing to take their money and provide transportation is assuming the risk.

As far as I know, it's purely commercial air carriers where manifests are checked against the list.

It could possibly apply to international charter since operators are required to file a manifest with DHS.

No, not for smoking pot. For being so self-absorbed in his "I'm so f-ing wonderful" fantasy that he and his entourage think they're above it all. For believing that they can abuse anything and anyone who get in their way, for the sole reason that he's a "star" - or worse, and "artist". For abusing people who were certainly doing their best to be civil, who want to keep their jobs, and for being an all-around jerk.

I'm not familiar with a Gulfstream's pressurization system. Since the crew and flight attendant had oxygen bottles, why not just climb above 14,000 and lower the pressurization enought to knock the passengers out? If they were becoming verbally abusive and were deemed a threat, to the point of keeping the flight attendant up front, sometimes you have use the plane's systems to quell the threat.
carlsonj
James Carlson 1
Nice idea, and you might get away with it under part 91, but not under part 135 -- 135.157 requires at least 10% of the passengers to have oxygen below FL150 and all of them above that. So, you'd at least have to declare an emergency to pull that trick off.

KennyFlys
Ken Lane 2
By the time they landed, there was no obvious evidence. The jerk party was released by the cops. Then they did a more detailed search of the plane where they found packaging that had trace amounts of pot but no clear indication of the owner so no charges were filed.

In the end, it was a risk on the flight crew, harassment of the FA and an escape by the guilty parties.

Hopefully, word will get around to enough 135 operators they'll refuse business from this jerk. I can't imagine any legitimate operator wanting that taking place on their planes, especially those that get turned over so fast to different passengers.
preacher1
preacher1 1
I think the story said the also found some stems too. Ain't no doubt they could have come up with something drug/alcohol related to hold them on but I imagine the cops were wanting them gone as bad as the next guy.LOL
PhotoFinish
PhotoFinish 3
The drug-sniffing dogs alerted to 2 passengers bags (one of may or may bit have been Bieber). However they never found any evidence. Clearly they smoked it all as the cabin was thick with marijuana smoke.

The party was detained for over 6 hours, so they were weighting their options. My guess is that they got a fast and aggressive response from some big-name law firm. Since there was no evidence, they lawyers quickly ascertained that the authorities had no case, and insisted that the party not be denied entry without cause. Again, that's just my guess as to happened behind the scene for 6 or more hours.

But that a 5 minute transition turned into a 6-hour ordeal shows that something was up. Anyone else may have spent the night in jail, and then released only the next day. Of maybe they'd be refused entry and sent back to Toronto.

It was Bieber's big bucks and high-priced criminal lawyers that prevented a more appropriate action. The lawyers wouldn't want a legally-significant action like deportation (or more precisely entry refusal) to adversely impact one of Bieber's other 2 on-going criminal complaints.

A 6-hour detainment without any actionable discovery is much more preferable than an adverse customs and immigration action.

Correct, parents who allow their children to participate in any of his activities must accept some degree of responsibility. Doesn't this fall under the U.S. Code § 46504, Interference with flight crew members and attendants? After all, even if it is a private jet, a Gulfstream dropping out of the sky on top of a populated area would not be pretty.
MACGSO
MACGSO 4
USC 46504:

"An individual on an aircraft in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States who, by assaulting or intimidating a flight crew member or flight attendant of the aircraft, interferes with the performance of the duties of the member or attendant or lessens the ability of the member or attendant to perform those duties, or attempts or conspires to do such an act, shall be fined under title 18, imprisoned for not more than 20 years, or both. It's not like the airlines or a well established Part 91 company where you could put your foot down legitimately or ground the airplane and walk away from it...

It sounds like charter operators and pilots have little choice or discretion in the nature of the behavior their pax may want to engage in....when drugs are involved that creates flight safety issues not just for those in charter flight but everyone who shares airspace with them. The FAA needs to step in and take some action if the Charter operators and pilots are conflicted about getting tough with pax who create dangerous situations by their behavior. Is use of the airspace a right or a privileged?

Bieber used Meridian for the charter...

Meridian is a full-service, private aviation company based at Teterboro Airport (KTEB) in Bergen County, NJ, located just minutes from New York City. Over the years, we have earned numerous industry awards and accolades for our world-class service and state-of-the-art facility. We cater to a wide variety of private aviation needs because we own and operate businesses that include Aircraft Management, Aircraft Maintenance, Air Charter, and a luxurious Executive Terminal / FBO that was completed in 2006.

http://www.meridian.aero/

Seems strange that they flew him back to Van Nuys, though.

He didnt use Meridian for the Miami drag racing arrest flight to Panama City, though.

As you can clearly see how one incident can do a lot of damage to an aviation company even though it has earned numerous industry awards and accolades if one does not take appropriate action.

Curious what public comment Meridian Aviation has made about this episode? I'm sure there have been many unofficial comments but what public statement has surfaced. Have not read anything public. Anyone with a link?

What a bloody douche bag! He is going to be in company with other dumbasses that had a fortune handed to them on a silver platter and then partied it all away after their popularity dissipated... Believing all those leeches and vultures that are lingering around hoping for him to dump some scraps their way is another fast track to ruin. Ask Hammer and Iron Mike.

Gives new meaning to the cold war vernacular known as 'the world of high flying'. A phrase generally reserved for astronauts, U-2 and SR-71 pilots. I could think of a million one-liners here that may invoke a chuckle, but this isn't exactly a laughing matter. There seems to be a level of hubris among the star-struck wealthy of our world that leads them to believe they can play by their own special set of rules. If anything good comes from this episode, it's the fact this once rising tween heart-throb is being revealed for what he really is, i.e. an arrogant, ignorant, wanna be a rap star, loser. If this was a publicity stunt? I hope it backfires and sends his career into a low altitude stall.

Loser Keeps Bieber is funny. But a 'Damaged Goods Returned' refund policy is more equitable.

Those Canadians already got rid of him once. They may play to the death to not have to take him back.

Personally, I would have notified the Authorities to meet the aircraft. Pull "Baby, Baby, Baby "Bieb's", his low-life father and posse and escort the low lifes to the county pokie! Since these guys are sooo connected to the hip, they'll get along just peachy in a 9x5 cell together! If this didn't happen...then these guys were in total violation of the FAR's and I have a problem with the charter company not supporting the crew members or if the crew members wanted to lay low to keep their jobs. Is this not a universal FAR? The FAA is investigating the situation. Doubt it will go anywhere because $$$$ talks. I say, give Beib's and his greedy scum bag body guards...and don't forget Dad... a one-way ticket to "Bum F**k Egypt!!!

It appears that may be exactly what happened.

The flight was very short. In 45 minutes, they barely had enough time to ascend and descend. CBP officers were waiting for them. The party was held for 6 hours. They searched for drugs.

Had they found physical evidence beyond the smell, things may have turned out differently. But it appears none of the crew were willing to be part of a 'he said, she said' fiasco, after being safely on the ground. The party had been detained. The plane, passengers and baggage had been searched. But no corroborating evidence was found.

We'll have to wait and see what the FAA will do if anything.

But after waiting around 6-7 hours, even the crew would want to go home themselves too, if they were still there. If they had long since gone, then the authorities had nothing. Nothing but it smells funny. The participants have long since been counseled to say nothing (given the previous incidents).

It may have been the prosecuting authorities that made the decision that without corroborating evidence, that they wouldn't bother to press any charges. So, we're all just speculating that the lack of prosecution is entirely due to unwillingness of the crew to press charges. But I add that it may actually have been the prosecutors, that elected not to have a 'smells like a joint was smoked up in here' circus prosecution and aquittal.

I understand that Photo. Short flight...but they sure had enough time to fill the cabin with smoke and rip the FA a new one! He is going to walk without even a slap on the wrist for this incident. This guy is like a virus that won't go away. The unfortunate part is that he is the poster child for young kids to give them the green light to act disrespectfully and have no regard for authority.

This has got to stop the Captian of the aircraft is in charge and the plane should have diverted to the nearest airport and had police and he should have requested DEA and FAA reps. I would like to know the charter group and make their life a living hell. I wish that the crew did return to origin of flight but I think the charter company would have made their lives a living hell. I would like to say that if you have a DUI in the states in the past 2 years you are not allowed to enter Canada. This little sh*t is here in the U.S. on a work visa send him back and not allow him to re-enter the U.S. and make him an undesirable to enter the U.S.

Would be hilarious, if the second hand smoke didn't have the potential to lead to flying under the influence charges. The pilots would've have easily gotten off, as the Bieb seems to.

Drinking or taking drugs in the pill form will not put the crew at risk. Unless the idiot attempts to enter the flight deck or attempts to access other flight equipment. That will be the day that smoking reefer is going to be allowed on flights. The nice thing about states allowing smoking that is fine on federal property it is not. Aircraft fall under federal regulations and I will say this if you were on my ride you would loose your argument when you landed.

Real easy if they pressed any charges the company would dismiss them due to the publicity and possibly other customers not wanting to fly with the operator due to the fact what else are they going public with on others. Part of the job the do just like others who have to deal with those type of people.

So, you wage war on the entire forum with profanity because of a few who are not even pilots?

I propose there be a warning to all members who use such profanity and be given one warning with the second being a suspension of posting privileges for thirty days.

This includes those who quote the profanity.

I'm not at all fond of Bieber regardless of his origination. But if that means his nonsense and attitude should dictate he be shipped back to Canada, that's Canada's problem. I'm sure the United States suffers less than desirable accolades for some that embarrass this country.

But the language needs to end here. It serves no purpose and only decreases the credibility of the poster.

This is not about legalization. That is a separate argument. This is about a hazard to the flight. At the very least, it was an unnecessary distraction that the crew had to try to deal with. Arguments about second-hand smoke aside, the presence of that much marijuana smoke may have made it more difficult for the crew to discern an electrical or other fire emergency as a separate event, especially with masks on.

Just from a factual stand point, second hand smoke will not intoxicate you. Anyone who tells you they test positive because they were at a party and people around him were smoking pot is LYING. Not defending the Beib but the misinformation of intoxication by proximity is just plain false. Now from a safety stand point an open flame is a safety concern, even with the stringent fire blocked fabric required by 135.

Right... and the CO2 resulting from a burning material won't displace oxygen, either.

Where did you pick up that nonsense???

Second hand smoke for normal use may or may not be picked up. It is indeed possible to take in enough THC that can trigger a test.

However, go back to the description in this scenario. Did you read the article? This was NOT normal smoking. It was several people smoking in what was effectively an air-tight capsule. There is air turnover in a jet but not nearly as fast as in a normal room at sea level. Only about half of the is fresh with the remainder being circulated. How well any HEPA filters might remove any of that particulate before recirculation is another story, even if they're installed.

This was far from a normal scenario. Even if they flight crew was not getting high, if it was enough smoke to affect their ability to do the first job at hand then it was too much smoke regardless of the amount without any intoxicants.

And, last I heard breathing in smoke is not exactly a healthy act to begin with.

The flight originated in Kitchener-Waterloo, which isn't far from the north shore of Lake Erie, so it wasn't in Canadian airspace for very long.
