All I have to say is; wow!
It was my impression that they weren't so much fired because of the collision but rather they were fired as a byproduct of wrongdoing that was uncovered during the course of the investigation.
Incredible... OK, maybe give the controller a tongue lashing for being on the phone - but, unless the Piper was in IMC, and on assigned headings/altitudes - it's still see & avoid.
In a situation like this, the media and public need a scapegaot. My hearts go out to the families of those killed and to the controllers who are being made an example of.
