Court action misrepresents safety measures, certification process

the demands and tone of this suit are nothing short of parasitical. Just as one auto accident does not provide a basis to question automotive engineering in its entirety, this accident cannot be used to measure the value and integrity of the homebuilt aircraft industry. (www.eaa.org) Más...

This is what some lawyers do.
What about charging April Gleason for child endangerment for putting her daughter at risk. She knew or should have known about grandpa's building and flying skills.

Because that has the same effect this baseless lawsuit has, and that is to paint the picture that homebuilt, and general aviation as a whole is inherently dangerous. I for one don't want the government at any level to step in and prevent me from sharing the joy of aviation with my daughter.

As for the lawsuit I know Van's has a great reputation in the aviation community and I am pretty sure they have done there due diligence legally to provide a safe product. I also would hope they would reach out to their customers and reiterate that AN fittings don't use a "sealant or gasket" they should be a metal to metal joint, and weather or not this installation can use an aluminum conical seal if proper torque does not stop a leak. It shouldn't need to be said, but it happened here so it could happen again.

I feel bad for Ms. Gleason, and don't think she was endangering the child. She lived through something I hope and pray I never have to. Most people don't understand how a toaster works, much less something as complicated as an airplane, I am positive she had every confidence in her father until the plane hit the ground. Accidents happen, in planes, cars, walking down the street, taking the bus, we are surrounded by risk. People make mistakes. This was a tragic accident, her father didn't intentionally put his family at risk. He seems to have grossly underestimated his skills, and it cost his family dearly, and him his life.

My endangerment comment was hyperbole. There was a recent posting about a 4yo girl in the backseat during acrobatics. Several comments on that thread referred to child abuse and endangerment in a relatively safe environment. It was a mistake to conflate the two posts. I am quite frustrated with what I see as attorneys' abuse of the court system for profit.

I figured your tone was a bit tongue in cheek.

For some reason this whole story gets my blood pressure up. I had to stand on my soapbox for a bit. I think it's time for me to get off the internet for a while.
