Phoenix Airport Damaged By Severe Thunderstorms

Enviado

Severe thunderstorms have caused significant damage to Phoenix's international airport. The storms have also grounded all flights, according to the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport's Twitter account. Parts of the airport are reportedly flooding, and a portion of the airport's roof appears to have been ripped off in the storm. (www.businessinsider.com) Más...

I wonder what a storm like this would do to Denver's roof

That's about what I'd need in order to do a zero groundspeed helicopter-like landing. That and someone on the ground with a video camera. ;-}

Sunday, June 24, 1990. The mercury reaches 126F (the "official" recorded temperature was 113F, and 118F on 6/25...but it was hotter), and Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) is closed when the tarmac starts to melt, and air density drops so low that aerodynamic lift can't be guaranteed to achieve take-off velocity, or allow enough runway space to abort flights safely if necessary.

I was visiting PHX that day, specifically Mesa, east of Sky Harbor, for a drum and bugle corps competition. All of the groups competing gave their members a "free day", no rehearsal, because of the heat.

Terminal 2 is the oldest terminal and by the looks of it, not well maintained.
