Fire on plane forces Halifax emergency landing

Enviado

A United Airlines flight from Newark to Brussels made an emergency landing at the Halifax airport Tuesday night after fire broke out on board. Cpl. Angie Hawryluk with Halifax District RCMP says the fire was contained to the galley area of the aircraft. Crew members were able to put it out with the on board fire extinguisher before landing. Someone's dinner burned on board

Darn grease flew out of the fryer and ignited on the gas stove....maybe serving burgers and fries isn't such a good idea on airliners!

It was. The pilot picked a very hospitable stop where UAL has facilities and lots of other heavy maintenance available. Even though it was 2 September 1998, Swissair 111 is still relatively fresh in the minds of Nova Scotians and of course the 9/11 aftermath when YHZ (and the community) accepted 47 of the 132 aircraft that NAV Canada diverted to the Maritime airports when US air space was closed. Undoubtedly having a 767 declare an emergency and land 2 minutes later brought back memories of 9/11 for the senior employees.

YHZ used to be a regular unscheduled stop for the west bound Concorde...for fuel and repairs.

United Airlines 777 diverts to Canada after galley fire

Busy evening at YHZ...first this flight and two minutes later a Europe bound AC 767 with medical emergency on board. Some of the world's finest airport seafood is there...hopefully they kept it open until the replacement arrived.
