Screw them everyone who has a handheld gps will need to either buy a new one or pay to have it fixed GO TO HELL Lightscrewed find something else to mess up.

Political or not, this whole mess lies on the doormat of the FCC that granted them all this in the first place. Somebody just yielded to political pressure and granted the bandwidths without doing any looking. If they had done the proper amount of looking and testing, then all this would have been discovered ahead of time. That being said, it seems like the simplistic thing to do would be to just isolate the bandwith on either sides of the GPS ranges, not letting it be used for anything, GPS expansion, lightsquared or anybody, but that's probably way too simple and per Boyd's comment here, it will cost us before it's over with.

I thought the frequency range used for GPS was specifically allocated because it was quiet and intended to be kept that way (at least where the FCC has jurisdiction). The whole spectrum license deal with LightSquared goes completely against that intent.

Well, it was(is)but apparently, although a different frequency, LS signals are so strong it just bleeds over, much like a strong CB would bleed over onto another channel or sometimes even into a PA

Exactly. LS is close enough to the GPS frequencies that their stronger (relatively) signal interferers with GPS receivers designed to look for a very weak signal.

Even if GPS receivers are part of the problem by looking for frequencies they shouldn't be, it's too vital for our national security to have to worry about interference. I suspect the GPS receivers are part of the problem since these filters seem to eliminate the problem. But they were designed when there wasn't much stronger signal near their band.

Hopefully LS can get a band that works for them. It sounds pretty slick.

Has anyone seen any technical details on the tests? It's hard to find solid info on it since it has become a political pissing contest.

Some have emerged in terms of numbers...62-75 showed evidence of interference on the defense side. The Terrain Early Warning corruption though is much more worrisome. This little gig they are proposing to use the more distant 10mHz in return for not challenging the results is a total scam....like ObamaCare: if they get it running you will never get rid of it and they will continue to erode the spectrum.

Where are you getting your numbers from? I want to see original data. Can you point me to your source? I'm not doubting you. I'm just trying to get to as raw as possible data about this. Avoiding the spin and political BS.

There are some others but they require subscription. Sorry I reversed a couple of numbers from memory...interference was 69 of 92 for 75% on the DOT/DOD review. Raw data are not available although I am not sure I could interpret them if they were...these are compilations.

The FAA data to my knowledge have not been released but they have stated that the Terrain Avoidance System is disrupted. Here is a technical link:

One other aspect is that GPS was to be one of the features of any satellite based air traffic control supplanting the ground radar system....this would end those thoughts.

Light squared should be allowed to use the spectrum for any purpose they want as long as their signal is satellite based and of the low strength that was allocated to the spectrum they are trying to hijack. The best analogy I have heard is they bought a house in a quiet residential neighborhood and have asked to have it rezoned into an open air bar with a live rock band seven days and nights a week. And they have the nerve to say it is the neighbors fault because they didn't not sound proof their houses when they built them. The FCC should be ashamed for even starting the variance process. could a large donation to the Obama campaign have helped get the ball rolling?

Since when has the FCC been fair? Remember having to buy a new TV or an adapter a couple of years ago. How about their forcing all radio users to spend huge sums of money to go “narrow band”. I think we should see if the FCC gets a kick back from electronic companies. Every time they have a new idea, someone has to buy new equipment.
