Hey Tower, I’ve got a number for you to call when able!

Yeah, I had the controller say that to me once. Turn around is fair play, I guess.

I fly in both the UK and USA. USA flying is by far the better experience and I mostly love everything about it, but it always amazes me when I'm cleared to land several miles out from an airport while traffic ahead of me are still on approach. Two weeks ago at Sanford, FL I was on a 2 mile final when the controller decided to slot an aircraft in front of me. When I asked for clarification that the aircraft on short base was landing ahead of me, the controller told me to 'pay attention'!! A clearance to land in the UK would usually only ever be given when you're number 1 to land and the runway is clear. Not sure about elsewhere in the world.

From my experience in Canada (years ago) you're not cleared to land until you are actually cleared to land. No one else ahead of you using the runway, no one else taking off. It causes some clearances really short final, but tower normally informs you to expect it short final. Something like "ABC your number one, traffic departing runway 34, expect clearance short final"

The US clearing you to land almost at the same time as the take off clearance has always baffled me.

If the consensus is that it needs to change how is that change manifested? What gets it started? Talking about it is a step in the right direction, but ”after all is said and done, a lot of things get said, but nothing gets done.“

I began my ATC career at Long Beach (LGB) and we routinely used Land And Hold Short (LAHSO) on both Runway 30 and what is now 26R. It sounds to me like the Diamond pilot doesn’t understand LAhSO and, instead of landing and clearing the runway when able, he rolled about 9000 feet down the runway, stopped short of the intersection, and sat there waiting for further instructions. The controller issued a landing clearance to SWA, anticipating separation, and then failed to scan the runway.

I had a similiar situation at KFLL, Ft. Lauderdale. I asked a swquencing questions while being vectored and was told to "pay attention". Felt like the controller was trying to abcigate responsility. He's in control but I'm responsible. Confusing.

... another case of ATC "overworked and "underpaid", instead of "lack of intelligence" and "beyond personal capabilities"!
