Ooops... forgot to tell you that I used those shiny new brakes in your car. Didn't realize they were for the trip home.

Makes me wonder if he landed a little hot or a little long. KEYW is only 4801' long.

Does not sound like a "Crash Lnding". Ran off the the runway because of poor or bad brakes.

Interesting that he was on Jimmy Johnson G150, Rick Hendrick has a GV. N500RH. Should be able to go in and out of key west with no problem.

Don't have the 150 specs but the G-V shows 2770 needed for landing which is fine, but shows needing 5150 to get off at MTOW. According to Chris above, KEYW is only 4801. All those planes are hangered together and I think the same flight crews fly them all.

Brian Bishop 0
That is correct. I did some work at the new Hendricks hangar when it was being built back in '04-'05. The Project Manager for the GC is a friend of mine. There's a bunch of them up there at KJQF. Jack Keeps his 727's at KCLT though.

As an added note, the article says they reported no brakes at touchdown. Reverse thrust will not bring you to a complete stop
Kingair31

Not going to come out of KEYW at MTOW in a G-V.

It's a G150, those brakes will stop it on a dime with no reversers!!!

plus a g-150 is smaller than a G-V.....I've seen a G-V and Bombadier come out KEHO and it's only 5000ft....only a fool would try to take off out there at MTOW

I know, it will actually reverse the plane. I've been flying for 30 years and never needed brakes to land or taxi.

What have you been flying for 30 years that doesn't require brakes to land or taxi? A kite?

Have u operated a jet into a 4000 ft. runway??? You'll need brakes also.

I heard Rick had a broken rib and collar bone. Ouch very uncomfortable. Looks like he needs to find a better pit crew for his aviation team.

I think Rick bought the 150 for Jimmie. Using it to get into KEYW I'm sure is easier than using the 450.

I have a question, in aviation photos enter tail # N480JJ I got photos of a Gulfstream 150 and a Learjet 31 with the same number how can that be? I am not Aviation, however I would like to know. Thank you.
MANBOI
MANBOI 0
On a photo website you will find any aircraft photographed with that tail number. Has nothing to do with the government, just the cataloging method of the private website. FAA lists the crash aircraft and no others.

preacher1 0
Probably our fabulous tax dollars not at work. It is the G150. They probably gave him the number that had been assigned to the Lear at one time. It's probably gone or reregistered and this entry never deleted. Wouldn't be the first time.
Kingair31
Kingair31 0
N480JJ was his Reg# on his Lear 31-A which was his first airplane, he retained that Reg# for the G-150 when he bought it.

Well Mr. Rousch flies himself.....Mr. Hendrick has pilots....I don't if he is licensed; he could be but most of his accidents involve others being at the the helm.

I think Mr. Rousch has had to give up his pilot's lic after the last crash. He lost an eye in that mishap. I am just glad both of these power house teams have survived this accidents.

Interesting, I've flown into Key West many times and always have had the rough, "on-target" landing. I've always wondered how there weren't any planes that ran off the runway. This is very interesting to see. Glad no one is hurt.

Their planes keep crashing with or without them flying. Jack does his own crashing, Rick hires his done. Still not charmed either way.

And how many vehicle crashes have been associated with Hendricks? Flying is safer. Consider the number of hours and cycles this organization flies and it's not surprising they've had a couple incidents.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 0
More Hendricks people have died in planes than cars. Race cars are supposed to crash. Planes not so much. If there were no crashes nobody would go to the races. It's a stockcar thing.

MR. BOOKOUT SAID EARLIER IN THE STRING THAT REVERSE THRUST WILL ONLY SLOW THE PLANE NOT STOP IT. I BELIEVE THAT IS TRUE OF SPOILERS TOO. MIGHT GO OFF A LITTLE SLOWER, BUT GO OFF JUST THE SAME.

I see comments that runways aren't long enough, brakes not working, maybe some pilot error.
I've taken mid-size jets legally under part 91 and 135 into runways between 3700 and 4200 ft.. There is no guessing, you do the numbers and if it works and is legal for the operation and is prudent also in the opinion of the crew, then you land, if not go somewhere else. I see comments that some have never used reversers to stop in 30 years of flying, but when you click on their name, their certificate says private. Makes me wonder...

I saw the same thing THRUSTT and wonder. As I said earlier, Hendrick has a stable full of equipment over there, registered to his drivers and HMS, crewed by a common group of pilots. Based on where he was going, and with just him & his wife, they probably just took what fit best and had a brake malfunction. In 4800', expecting normality, reverse trust or anything else is not going to help you that much, as half that distance is gone just in reaction time. I'm sure they dropped something or it would have been worse than it was.

I guest the runway was too short to stop the Gulfstream 150 Jet with ONLY reverse thrusters, ahhhhh??? And I suppose the Gulfstream 150 jet did not have a parachute to stop it like the jet-fitters do???? uhmmmmm !@#$%^^&*()_+?

Read another article that said Rick broke his collar bone and rib and the pilots were fine. Sounds like someone wasn't wearing their seatbelt?

I flew out of there earlier that same day (RV10). He was headed out to Sunset key where we had our wedding anniversary earlier in the week.
It was fun watching the big stuff come in and out. Level as a pool table, no obstructions to deal with but short and often wet. You land on the numbers, deploy everything and definitely use the brakes. A DH-whatever refused TO on the active due to the ever present xwind slightly favoring the opposite direction.
Speaking of xwinds... some years ago I landed a tailwheel Maule there with a 90 degree gusty xwind - couldn't get it straight with full rudder until reaching the flare and some wind gradient. Couldn't turn downwind - needed a 270 to get off the runway. Tower said "nice job Maule, a Mirage ground looped earlier today and drove a main thru the wing". A bittersweet experience

Anyone know what the G150 has for backup brake system? 4800' isn't that short, and with backup brakes should still have been more successful unless the landing was "long and hot".

A lot has to do with the runway conditions. Was it wet or dry? What was the temp and pressure. Seems really smart to check the landing performance with the conditions at the time of landing without reversers. Then make an intelligent decision as to weather you want to take your own ass in for a landing. I have thousands of landings in jets and any landing under 5000 requires careful consideration.

Rick Hendrick is a good friend of mine and we were texting Friday. He is home from the hospital still in a lot of pain. I do know some of the pilots with Hendrick Aviation but not sure who was flying. I guess we all will wait for the NTSB report.

Why didn't the flight crew divert to MIA??? Long runways and the Gulfstream could have coasted to a stop. Key West just doesn't have any room for errors with it's short runway.

Maybe he should consider a share with NetJets. Just saying.

He uses GA aircraft (fixed and rotary) the way we all wish we could. There are risks with frequent, presumably part 91, ops. While his name may have been on the Martinsville crash, he wasn't. The price of living fast and well.

My point being that NetJets has an incredible safety record and culture. Several major advantages are: A flexible jet. Owners have the choice of jets that best suit their airport needs. I would guest an Excel or Sovereign would have better performance numbers for short field than the G150. The other being the extremely high level of pilot professionalism and standardization. Not many 91 operators can compare. NetJets operates 91/91K/ and 135. The rich and famous can have the lifestyle WITHOUT the considerably less hazard.

Hi guys. That's too bad about the G150 bizjet crashing but thankfully nobody was hurt bad. Regarding Hendrick Motorsport's G-V (N500RH) & flying it out of Key West, I guess they just never depart there when fully loaded. Here's a shot of it resting on the ramp at KEYW last October.

Yes, that is correct. We text often, but, because of the work I do, I communicate almost everyday with Motorsports. Recovery will take a little longer than once thought. I hope to visit him at this house or office next week while in Charlotte.

Hi Steve. Sure, I'd love to see your photos. That would be great! Flying on that huge G-V must have been so cool. I've refueled & been inside a few while on the ramp at Toronto Intl many years ago but never had the pleasure of flying in one. I've always adored how gorgeous the wings are on a G-V with their smooth lower surface without any canoe fairings. I saw one of Rick's Saab 2000's on the ramp at the Adirondack Regional Airport(KSLK) in upstate New York on Jan 1st 2008. I was told by line guys they were in town with a few drivers to participate in a Bobsled Race at nearby Lake Placid. Good Times!

Thanks Chris, I'll send some over the weekend. I live on the beach in NC and the Presidential fleet uses the Wilmington International airport (KILM) for practice. Air Force One comes down on occaion and I have over 100 photos of this aircraft doing cool approches. last time he was here he stayed 2 1/2 hours. Awesome aircraft. Last year Hendrick bought a 3 engine falcon jet but, now they do not let take photos in the hanger. Not sure if they still own that aircraft. Last year I flew into the small airport in Toronto on another friends plane. I heard they are closing the smaller airport in Toronto. Is that true? Nice airport.

Hi guys.

>> Steve, yeah that must be pretty cool watching Air Force One shooting approaches in NC. Unfortunately you heard correctly about the smaller airport in Toronto which is called Buttonville (CYKZ). It is a great airport with the main runway being 4000x100 (rwy 33/15). I trained there for my PPL back in 1985 & visit it all the time. I last flew out of it a month ago in a 1968 Piper Cherokee. So many pilots are in dis-belief about the decision to close it. The land has already been sold. Apparently condoes, etc while be built there by real-estate giant Cadillac Fairview. It's supposed to close in about 4 years from now. This will leave over a hundred resident planes from small Cessnas to bizjets like a Falcon 7X looking for a new home, not to mention the flying clubs & maintenance shops. It's all about money ... it's a business deal. It's the 10th busiest airport in all of Canada! Crazy eh!

Chris.
