Transaero to Cease Operations October 26

Transaero Airlines, Russia’s second largest carrier, will cease operations on October 26. The move comes after Rosaviatsia, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, revoked the airline’s operating certificate effective on that day.

The agency said that a recent audit revealed that the airline does not have the ability to continue to service its debt and fully fund continuing operations and therefore does not meet Russian certification requirements.

Last month Transaero announced plans to be acquired by Aeroflot, the country’s largest airline, although Aeroflot later decided not to proceed with the transaction.

Earlier this month, the airline announced it would liquidate and cease operations on December 15, 2015 and that it would refund ticket purchases to passengers who held tickets for after that date.

“Upon the decision of the Government to reorganize the activities of Transaero, and to ensure the transportation of our passengers, the sales of tickets for our flights has been stopped,” the airline posted on its Facebook page in early October.
