HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead following a small plane crash about a half-mile off Kalaupapa on Molokai.

The Cessna Grand Caravan operated by Makani Kai Air reportedly went down at about 3:45 p.m.

Officials tell Hawaii News Now that one person is dead, while eight others were rescued.

Makani Kai owner Richard Schuman says the flight was heading from Molokai to Oahu.

Hawaii News Now has learned that the Director of the Department of Health, Loretta Fuddy and her deputy director, Keith Yamamoto were on the flight.

According to the Maui Fire Department, three patients were flown to Oahu for treatment; two declined treatment and are staying in Kalaupapa, while three other patients were taken to Molokai General for treatment.

Initial reports say response crews spotted the tail end of the plane sticking out of the water.
