US Airways CEO: No decision yet on branding for 'new' AA

American Airlines' new look.

American Airlines rolled out its first new logo and paint scheme for its aircraft in nearly 40 years in January. But that came less than a month before American's merger with US Airways was announced on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14).

So, will American's new look survive the merger?

US Airways CEO Doug Parker, who will lead the combined carrier, said last week that no decision had been made, The Wall Street Journal reports.

"It may make sense (to keep it)," Parker is quoted by the Journal as saying Thursday at an industry conference in Washington, D.C.

The merged airline will keep the American name once the merger with US Airways is complete, but the Journal says Parker "previously avoided direct comment on whether it would keep the new branding."

Parker did not give a firm timetable as to when the company will decide on its post-merger branding.

For now, American is continuing its effort to transition its fleet to the new look.

"We remain committed to building the new American – one fully reflective of the new, combined company," American says in a statement to Today in the Sky. "So, while we will be painting new aircraft as they come into the fleet this year and beginning to update signage and other environments throughout the system with our new look, we are mindful that we are now creating an even better brand through our merger."
