Airbus and Delta Airlines to Enter in Multi-Billion Dollar Deal, Sources Say

European planemaker Airbus and Delta Airlines may be about to close a multi-billion dollar deal, Reuters reports. According to sources close to the matter, the airline is negotiating to buy 37 new current-generation A321 passenger jets — a deal that could be worth $4.3 billion at list prices.

While Airbus has declined to comment any further on the matter, a Delta spokesperson has said that “no decision has been made on any aircraft transaction.” If the deal does go through, it will be announced next week as part of a fleet renewal plan that could also include 75 Bombardier CSeries jets and 50 options, the sources commented.

Regarding the Airbus deal, Delta would acquire the current version of the A321, a 185-seat aircraft that has shown significant advantages against the largest member of the rival Boeing 737 family.

The airline has been reviewing its fleet and the deal comes at an auspicious time, as Delta is preparing to present the first of the 45 A321 jets it has already ordered. The reveal will happen during a media event and “fleet showcase” on April 28-29 at which the airline says it plans a series of announcements.

Yet Delta flies more 739s. Initial schedule has the 739s for the longer flights and the A321 for the shorter haul

Boeing made a strategic blunder by not offering a replacement for the 757, 321 is the only viable option.
